What a Digital Setup Cannot Tell You

A setup shows a possible endpoint. It does not know whether that endpoint is the right one.

Published 2026-03-11

Digital setups are excellent at geometry and silent about biology. They will show a tooth in a position the alveolus cannot support, and they will show it convincingly.

The clinical work is in the inputs: the boundaries drawn, the restorative endpoint declared, the movements marked as non-negotiable.

Used well, a setup is a way of testing assumptions quickly. Used passively, it becomes a plan nobody wrote.

Key takeaways

  • Declare boundaries before staging
  • Plan to the restored anatomy where restoration is planned
  • A setup encodes assumptions — make them explicit
